Travel Made Simple is a funny poem about travelling on a budget airline to a Mediterranean country. Inspired by the disappointment of spending hours with less-than-savoury passengers, TMS explores the idea of not bothering at all and keeping travel confined to an armchair for convenience’ sake and bodily comfort. Written in 2001 and published in 2005 by Vibewire Youth Services online.
getaway for 5 nights
on a return flight to
[insert tropical country here]
blue skies & even bluer water
tempt from 20,000 feet
fares, transfers and meals provided
in an authentic Mediterranean language while
you sit back,
relax,
& try to decipher the sick bag
from the comfort of your very own
economy armchair
explore a lush garden
of Nike footwear
& watch glorious sunsets
grow more enchanting
when you have a window seat
or
visit an oasis of tranquility and romance
(watersports & unlimited golf available)
at a major tourist unattraction –
the Toilet
(visited more frequently every year)
pawpaws, breadfruit, coconuts & yams
are just a few exotic fruits
not on the menu,
but a refreshing towellette,
& fried fish & chips
are possible
in a fragrant forest
of other passengers
take time out
while the hushed sounds of ‘Gladiator’ soothe
the psyche, cleanse
the soul of toxins &
remove unwanted Roman Emperors
cultural bonuses include;
kids flying free
a half-day stopover in a Bangkok airport &
infinite ocean views
punctuated by screams
towards the end of the journey
AIR SEMPRE –
an aisle of smiles
where someone else worries about the stock market
Rome, London, Paris, Greece –
take an armchair holiday
for f**k’s sake
