Suzanne Day

My name is Suzanne Day and I’m a professional writer, author and SEO blogger, based in Melbourne, Australia.

I started writing from a very young age – I was always a bookworm and loved to make anthologies of short stories and poems. At school, I majored in literature and technological design and won a number of bursaries through the CSIRO and local writing groups. From there, I went to Deakin University and studied Professional Writing & Editing for a year but became disillusioned with university life and completed a Certificate in Professional Writing & Editing at TAFE instead.

The TAFE course was excellent and taught me how to get published and how to write for an audience. I was thrilled with the new possibilities open to me, particularly regarding humourous poetry, and was published in quite a few places (see Publication Credits for a list). My favourite publication experience was when “Poverty in the Laundromat” was published in Big Hammer in 2003. It was most fitting that the poem was put into an anthology for bored people to read and was distributed in laundromats across the USA.

While doing some work experience at The Big Issue as a sub-editor and book reviewer, I decided I wanted to learn more about the process of book production. I got a job at a print shop and studied a Certificate in Electronic Publishing, which basically taught me about graphic design and how to use the software. From there, a decade-long career in graphic and web design developed and I learned all about printing in various mediums. Design was a very exciting career as I got to practise being an Art Director, a Communications Manager, a Marketing Manager and a Photographer, as well as the usual design mediums (view my design portfolio).

Throughout all of this, I completed studies and worked in many other areas, such as office administration, bookkeeping, hospitality and reception, as well as travelling, talking to people, collecting stories and building up lots of life experience (so I would have something to write about!) I’d always enjoyed making things and handcrafts, so taking my writing and design skills to the next level, I started publishing tutorials and how-to’s on craft items.

In 2008, I started getting excited about search engine optimisation (SEO) in regards to blogging and decided to explore SEO writing. This was a bit like writing advertising copy with an internet audience (which I had done extensively in the past) but with a difference – competing against the rest of the world, with innovation and advanced technological tools. There was no path to follow, no courses to study. SEO for me was self-taught, along with CMS website development and troubleshooting.

Honing my skills in blogging at places like Dooyoo.co.uk, SiteCritic and Hubpages, I was thrilled to host the first Hubpages meetup in Australia on Australia Day in 2011. I learnt a lot from Hubpages – joining an online writing platform is a great place to get started learning about blogging and Adsense. Since then, I have been employed in a few full time positions for SEO blogging, as well as building my own blogging empire here on Sasspirations.

I work with all sorts of people in the business, from ecommerce startups requiring bloggers to manufacturing companies needing press releases and website content. I plan to publish more books in the future and love learning about the internet and the increasingly new possibilities in design, publishing and writing!

Cheers,
